About this collection

Paul Gifford, archivist at the Genesee Historical Collections Center from 1987 to 2018, was a musician in his youth, learning the dulcimer and fiddle and the traditions associated with them in Michigan and its larger region within North America.  He was involved with the Original Dulcimer Players Club and was an organizer of the Michigan Fiddlers Association.  These and other events revitalized the dying traditions of these instruments.  He made many informal tape recordings between 1971 and 1986 that document the older hammered dulcimer tradition in several states and also traditional fiddling in Michigan.  In addition, the collection includes copies of recordings made earlier by others.  The recordings on this site are only a portion of the entire collection.
